Tiesings patents were exploited by Eli Whitney Tiesing submitted a Magazine Rfile to the Board of 1878 but the gun did not conviced. It seems that at least one rifle was made by Frank W. Tiesing. It should prove his skills assigned as a gunsmith. This rifle rememberd a Winchester 1873 patern in .44-40 caliber but without the loading gate. Instead the gun was reloaded by using the loading lift when the lever was closed. Furthermore, the dust cover was integrated into the frame (patent no. 191,196). In fact, this gun differs to the Winchester 1873 only by the dust cover, the cartridge lever and the support for the firing pin. It is believed that this gun was made in 1877, maybe as pattern for the patent office. It was the personal gun of Frank W. Tiesing and had no serial number. frame-right dust-cover Unfortunately, I was not able to get full pictures of that gun. His skilles as a gunsmith allowed him to be employed by Whitney Arms Company where he was charged in the developement of the Whitney-Kennedy lever action rifle and others. Apparently, Eli Whitney Jr., searched for a skill person not only to support Samuel V. Kennedy, who was leading the projet to build a lever action rifle but also to be able to secure their solutions by patents. Frank W. Tiesing was engaged in the Shollhorn & Tiesing Manufacturing Co., New Haven. The operated in coach, tools, hardware and specialities. At least one of Tiesings patent (I do not show it, e.g. 243,006 and 239,201 assignor to the Shollhorn & Tiesing Manufacturing Company) was for coaches. |
